Quaternary geoscientist position with the Ontario Geological Survey

What can I expect to do in this role?

As part of the technical geoscience mapping team in the Ontario Geological Survey, you will:

provide regional descriptions and interpretations of Ontario’s quaternary deposits
plan, design and conduct independent and multi-disciplinary 2D and 3D Quaternary mapping projects across Ontario
collect geoscience data, prepare maps, reports and public presentations
provide scientific leadership and advice
direct and lead the work of field crews
contribute to the sustainable development of Ontario’s earth and mineral resources

How do I qualify?

Mandatory Requirements:

you must be a member of the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario or qualified to obtain this professional designation
you must be able to travel to sites throughout Ontario to complete field work for extended periods of time
you must have the ability to operate road and water vehicles such as 4-wheel drive trucks, ATVs, boats and canoes
you must be able to orienteer, navigate and camp in remote areas

Specialized Knowledge:

you have thorough knowledge of quaternary geoscience and relevant disciplines of geoscience that are applicable to the study of quaternary deposits
you have demonstrated knowledge of surficial mapping techniques and practices and drift prospecting methods including surficial geochemistry
you have demonstrated knowledge of subsurface mapping techniques and tools in order to recognize, define and characterize hydrostratigraphic units
you have the ability to develop new interpretations and hypotheses by compiling, synthesizing and integrating diverse geoscience datasets
you are skilled in using GPS technology and interpreting air photos and satellite imagery for map construction and to ensure accurate location of field observations and safe travel during field operations

Communication, Interpersonal and People Skills:

you have proven interpersonal and team leadership skills
you have strong communication skills and demonstrated experience delivering geoscience information to diverse client groups
you have experience developing and delivering presentations

Other Important Skills:

you have planning, organizational and problem-solving skills to plan logistics, organize and lead surficial mapping or research projects and broad multi-disciplinary teams
you have experience with applicable computer software and hardware for geoscience applications as well as database, spreadsheet and word processing software

Salary range: $1,366.39 â€“ $1,758.70 per week
